Harley

Name:  Harley Barns
Nickname:  Har, Harley girl, baby Harley, princess
Age:  1 1/2 years old
Gender:  Female
Breed:  Red Rottweiler

Harley is a red rottweiler puppy we adopted from the country home of an almost blind and deaf woman too weak to take care of her puppies.  :(  She was a month and a half when we got her and had parvo virus when we got her, due to being grouped together in a small crate with lots of other pure bred rottweiler puppies where they all used the rest room and ate their food.  I nursed her through it in the time span of about two weeks, as the medicine the vet gave her she would simply throw it back up (pill form).

Although I've heard a lot about red-coated rottweilers being a BYB breed and numerous things from the AMERICAN KENNEL CLUB about how it is a fault and they have many health issues such as cardiac problems, joint problems and a numerous other health problems, I have not seen any in this healthy, precious baby.  After getting through parvo with her in only TWO WEEKS and not being on medicine, she displayed incredible intelligence.

We thought it might be because she might be mixed with a more intelligent breed, thus being the reason for her red coat and green/yellow eyes, but after having her tested she was confirmed to be a pure-bred rottweiler.   She was very easy to command-train and potty train, and in fact, it took us less than two or three weeks for her to figure out to go to the door and scratch.

I doubted she was pure-bred even after the test, because of the shape of her head.  She's got the normal Rottweiler build and markings (golden paws, eyebrows, chest markings, ect.) but sad such an oddly shaped head.  After taking her to get tested a second time for reassurance, it was reconfirmed that she is indeed a purebred red coated rottweiler, and my vet said it may be because the parvo virus (she shrunk so much, and was very malnourished during that time.  we were sustaining her off of chicken broth and pedialyte and gatorade) slowed her growth spert and she might not grow into her full rottweiler features until she finally began growing again.

Her head has grown into its rottweiler shape now.  She's a perfect little pup and we love her to death!!  She's healthy, happy, and a defiance to the holier than thou American Kennel Club.

Harley finally hit her growth spert, though you can't really tell in
